Tom and Patty Caperton with Mayor Beth Van Duyne

Patty Landers Caperton and Tom Caperton have been named Irving High Spirited Citizens for their dedication to the Irving community.

Patty was a longtime Irving employee who retired as director of the Irving Public Library System in 2010. But, retirement didn’t slow down her community involvement. As a faithful supporter of the Friends of the Irving Library, she continues to volunteer weekly at Wednesday work days and special events. She’s held several leadership positions with the Las Colinas Rotary, which is now the Irving-Las Colinas Rotary, and was the first female president of any Irving Rotary Club in 1993. She was the first chair of the Irving school’s Public Information Advisory Committee and served as a co-chair for the American Cancer Society’s Hollywood Premier Night in 1995.

She and her husband Tom joined the Irving Heritage Society after her retirement, and she’s chaired several events. She was the Society’s 2013 Valentine Sweetheart.

Tom has volunteered for many Heritage Society activities. For the past two years, he served as treasurer for the Family Advocacy Center Board of Directors, with the responsibility of overseeing the payroll as well as other organizational finances.

He is an active member of the Greater Irving/Las Colinas Chamber’s Small Business Services Committee and the La Cima Heritage Committee, where the couple shares responsibility as co-chairs. Together they serve as deacons at their church, where Tom is also a church elder.

Longtime Irving resident Mary Higbie nominated the Capertons for this award, which was started in 1988 by the Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau to encourage volunteerism.
